Avoiding Airframe Failure

Few scenarios hold more abject terror for pilots than an inflight break-up. Leaving midair collisions for discussion another day, most in-flight breakups follow identifiable patterns and thereby provide at least some techniques for avoidance. I won't trivialize the horror with a fictionalized account of in-flight structure failure; we all shudder at the mere thought of it. But most in-flight breakups follow identifiable patterns. We know how and why they happen so we can learn--and practice--techniques to avoid them.
