For a few years, I frequently flew into Elizabethton, Tenn., a beautiful non-towered airport nestled in the northeast Tennessee hills. A common trip at the time included a departure southeastward into North Carolina. To plan a standard-for-me departure from Elizabethton, I looked closely at the sectional chart, noting steeply rising terrain to the east and south, and a ridge immediately north of the airport. I reviewed the instrument approach chart to confirm the proximity of terrain, noting the non-standard instrument departure procedures (indicated by the T-in-triangle symbol at the upper left of the chart). Referring to the A/FD, I found the recommended ODP reproduced here.
