The Republic of Ireland Government is scrapping its Air Travel Tax from April next year. The fee, which was brought in during 2009, is charged on all flights departing from Irish airports. When introduced it ranged from €2 to €10 per passenger and came in for severe criticism from the airline industry. It was replaced by a standard €3 rate in March 2011. The decision to scrap the tax was announced by Ireland's finance minister Michael Noonan and forms part of a new initiative to increase tourism.
