London Ashford Cleared for Take Off

The UK Government has approved a major project to increase facilities at London Ashford Airport (Lydd) on Romney Marsh in Kent. The centrepiece will be a new terminal, with an annual capacity of 500,000 passengers, but in addition the runway will be extended by 965ft (294m), with an additional 500ft (150m) starter extension, to enable it to handle aircraft such as the Boeing 737 or Airbus A319. The operator originally submitted its expansion plans more than five years ago. These were approved by Shepway District Council in 2010, but they were then subject to scrutiny by the Secretaries of State for Transport and Communities and Local Government. Lydd is located in an environmentally and ecologically sensitive area but, following a public inquiry, the government said it was "satisfied that there would be no likely significant effects on any designated conversation sites."
