Boeing and KLM has begun a series of commercial flights to demonstrate how several advanced technologies, fuels and concepts can improve efficiency, save fuel and reduce carbon and noise emissions. The demonstrations started in March and encompass all aspects of aircraft flight including pre-flight, take-off, cruise, descent, landing and post-landing. The Optimal Flight programme comprises 26 flights during 2013, including round trips with a KLM Boeing 777-200 between Amsterdam and New York JFK. Each flight is partly powered by sustainable aviation bio fuel sourced from used cooking oil. The flights also feature new services that deliver various advisories (air traffic, routing and weather updates, for example) directly into the aircraft's flight management computer (FMC) and other mobile devices on the flight deck developed by Boeing Research & Technology. This relieves the flight crew of the job of imputing such data manually.
