The Avro 685 York was produced as a private venture by AV Roe and Co Ltd - it was not a 'public' project because a wartime agreement between the allies stipulated that production of transport aircraft would be concentrated in the USA, leaving British manufacturers free to concentrate on combat types. The York was designed as a military transport for the RAF, and utilised the wings, Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, and twin-fin tail unit of the Lancaster bomber, mated to a completely new fuselage of tapering square section with double the capacity of the Lancaster. As a purely interim design, the York had little chance of competing post-war with American types such as the Douglas DC-4, but nevertheless it managed to find gainful employment for 20 years.
