India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given the green light to proposals to purchase 56 Airbus C295W medium transport aircraft as a replacement for the Indian Air Force's Avro HS748 fleet. Approval was given at a meeting on May 13, during which the DAC also gave the go-ahead to the purchase of 200 Kamov Ka-226T helicopters, 38 more Pilatus PC-7 Mk Us and conversion of two Air India Boeing 777-300ERs in to VVIP transports. The C295Ws will be produced jointly by Airbus Defence and Space (ADS) and local partner Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), which will establish a local assembly line.
