Ireland Chosen for ALERT Service

US global air traffic surveillance company Aireon has announced that its Aircraft Locating and Emergency Response Tracking (Aireon ALERT) service will be managed from Ireland. It will be based at the Irish Aviation Authority's (IAA) North Atlantic Communications Centre in Ballygirreen on the west coast and will be provided as a public service to the aviation community, free-of-charge. The service will allow rescue agencies, ATC providers or airlines to request the location and last flight track of any 1090 MHz Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) equipped aircraft in distress. It is expected that approximately 90% of the world's commercial fleet will be ADS-B equipped in the near future.
