INTERFLUG FLYING THE FLAG FOR EAST GERMANY

The Interflug story began in the aftermath of World War Two. Germany was divided and civilian flying lay idle for ten years until 1955, when both parts became sovereign states. The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) became a close ally of the United States, Great Britain and France, while the German Democratic Republic (GDR) came under the influence of the Soviet Union. Before the war and division of the country, Lufthansa was the dominant airline, a very well-known company, serving an impressive worldwide network. When it regained its sovereignty and civilian passenger flights resumed in 1955, both countries started where they had left off, founding their own Lufthansa. For a few years, there were two companies of the same name, one operating in FRG and one in GDR.
