Tucked away in the dense, 60-page quarterly financial report published by Boeing at the end of July, and filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, is the statement that "it is reasonably possible that we could decide to end production of the 747" Boeing would pull the plug if it felt "unable to obtain sufficient orders" and programme losses became "material".
