The Irkut MC-21-300 airliner performed its maiden flight at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant airfield in southern Russia on May 28. The aircraft was flown by the Oleg Kononenko and co-pilot Roman Taskayev, both of whom have Hero of Russia awards. The test sortie lasted 30 minutes during which the MC-21 flew a number of simulated landing approaches and the crew assessed its general handling characteristics. Kononenko later reported: "[The] flight mission is accomplished. There are no obstacles revealed preventing the tests' continuation".
