Chicago Opens New Runway

Chicago/O'Hare International Airport, Illinois commissioned a new runway as part of a $6bn modernisation programme on November 5. The cost of the runway itself was around $lbn, funded through a combination of federal airport improvement grants and airline-backed bonds. Runway 9C/27C, which is 11,245ft long and 200ft wide, will be used as one of the airport's primary arrival runways, but will handle departing flights initially. The commissioning marks the completion of O'Hare's parallel runway layout, with eight now in operation.
