Switzerland's recent plebiscite narrowly approved - by just 0.1% - the government's plans to acquire new fighter aircraft. A total of 59.4% of eligible voters cast their ballot in the referendum held on September 28. Defence Minister Viola Amherd later confirmed that it was a mandate to continue evaluation of the candidates for the $6.5bn project, for which the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II have been offered.
