KISSING THE MOUNTAIN DRAMA IN THE ALPS

The dramatic events of January 2 started with a party of six planning to ski the Col dAnterne near Chamonix in the French Alps. The group was on holiday in Combloux and drove to the ski resort of Plaine Joux intending to hike 3,280ft (1,000m) to the top of the pass on skis with skins (these attach to the bottom of skis to provide grip for going uphill). About 165ft (50m) from the top, one of the party, Bruno Tissier, slipped backwards and shouted in pain; he'd twisted his left leg, dislocating his knee. He was unable to move, so Nicolas Derely, who would later take the incredible A screen grab showing the helicopter performing the skid support landing on the mountainside. A video of the rescue on January 2 went viral on the internet.
