Over the decades since its introduction, Fokker had made gradual improvements to its successful F-27 Friendship to ensure it maintained competitiveness. However, by the early 1980s, the aircraft was beginning to show its age. Having first flown in October 1955, its noisy and uneconomical Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops needed replacing, but there was no successor on the engine maker's drawing board.
