US Airways is joining other major carriers in making more fleet cuts to adjust to higher oil prices, although a senior airline executive stresses that relatively strong liquidity will help US Airways weather an economic slowdown. The airline will "get rid of three more airplanes" from its fleet than planned, said President Scott Kirby at this week's JP Morgan Aviation & Transportation Conference. The carrier is "further evaluating capacity with a downward bias due to fuel," and while US Airways is still working on its schedule for the second half of the year, capacity will likely be down by an additional 2%-3%, Kirby said. This is on top of the 1.5% cut the carrier had already announced.
