Auto manufacturers continue to improve the safety of vehicles they produce — whether by adding seatbelts, roll bars, and airbags, or advanced technologies such as anti-lock brakes, stability controls, and lane-departure warnings. Soon, it might not be uncommon to see vehicles "driving themselves" while passengers chat, listen to satellite radio, or fiddle with their BlackBerrys. Until that happens, however, automakers inadvertently are putting us at risk.
