Ford and Toyota join up to develop rear-wheel drive hybrid technology

Ford and Toyota have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop rear-wheel drive gasoline hybrid systems for light trucks and SUVs over the next 10 years. The joint programme will also include collaboration on next generation telematics and internet technology. Both Ford and Toyota have successfully introduced front-wheel drive hybrid systems to the passenger vehicle market. Toyota has sold more than three million hybrid vehicles since it introduced its first-generation Prius in 1997. Ford has used hybrid systems in its Fusion sedan and Escape SUV.
