Evolution accelerates

The demise of the internal combustion engine has been predicted many times but it's still the dominant power source for the world's fleet of vehicles and is likely to remain so for decades. Even after more than a century of development, there's still a lot of room for improvement in all of the engine's moving parts and in its complex gas exchange and,' combustion processes. Making small improvements everywhere can deliver significant benefits, and, given the financial penalties for manufacturers that miss their fleet-average targets, it's never been more cost-effective to realise them.
