Daimler is pushing ahead with inflatable metal structures for series production vehicles. The first applications could be in B-pillars as well as areas in the front crash structure. The technology, which comprises a folded aluminium section that can be expanded in the event of an accident, helps to reduce weight while improving packaging and safety. Thomas Merker, Daimler's vice-president of body, safety and telematics, said: "We've shown the latest version of the technology to the board and they were very impressed.
