Golf's battery will charge on the move

Consumers will be able to charge the VW Golf plug-in hybrid's battery while driving. This will allow drivers to build up enough stored energy to enter cities with zero-emissions zones. The functionality is already available on competitor vehicles such as the plug-in Toyota Prius, but VW had been reluctant to introduce it on the Golf. Dr Kai Philipp, project managerforthe plug-in hybrid Golf, said: "This driving mode is not very efficient so our recommended use case is to charge the battery at home. But we are planning to implement functionality which gives the driver the ability to recharge the battery via the combustion engine."
