The popularity of mobile phones and tablet computers has meant an increase in the pace of technological development in consumer electronics. The evolutionary cycle for processing technology - to make devices faster, add functionality and improve usability - is speeding up. Every six months, it seems, technology firms release improved chips with more cores and faster processing speeds. The automotive sector can't upgrade systems at this pace, but it can use the technology at a given point to improve its vehicles: making them safer and increasing infotainment system functionality, Volkswagen Group uses the Tegra3 graphic-processing unit (GPU) technology - supplied by NVIDIA - to power the infotainment system in the C-segment VW Golf and compact Audi A3. The Tegra3 chip is also used by Tesla to power its Model S's human-machine interface and a Tegra2 in the instrument cluster.
