Nissan is supporting a project to develop an audible pedestrian recognition system that would alert individuals to passing electric vehicles. Collaborating with 10 other members, the OEM is part of a European Commission-led project, eVADER, to provide audible warning technology -that has minimal impact on noise pollution levels - for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. As part of the project, a one-off LEAF concept vehicle was used to demonstrate the potential of the next-generation audible alert to the presence of the quiet vehicles. At an early stage of the project, siren-like noises were ruled out, because the sound was irritating.
