The demand for SUVs has increased enormously, and they now account for 25% of sales in Europe. But consumers aren't necessarily seeking rugged all-terrain vehicles - they want the higher driving position but mixed with comfort and a smoother ride and typically in compact dimensions. The other challenge for engineers is making the vehicles as efficient as possible. Land Rover has a long history of developing capable all-wheel drive vehicles, whether at the luxury end of the market with the Range Rover, or the more agricultural with the Defender. The Land Rover Discovery Sport replaces the Freelander that was launched in 1997, and should help the firm to meet consumer expectations better, balancing off- and on-road ability with comfort.
