Simulating the combustion process has always been a challenge, calculating the movement of fuel, the moment of ignition and the processing of irregular data and small chemical mechanisms. The underlying computational power has also posed challenges too. CPUs, no matter how many cores they may have, process data in a sequential format. That works in some applications, but when simulating complex scenarios it can require a lot of time to complete tasks. The answer could be wider use of GPUs, processor technology that works in a parallel format, allowing more information to be churned through. The technology has traditionally been used in industries where video rendering was required, but more recently it has been integrated into vehicles to power infotainment and autonomous systems. It has also been used in development projects to help simulate every aspect of the vehicle.
