In a competitive market, where OEMs are constantly seeking to stay ahead of their rivals, research and development is the cornerstone of the industry. OEMs invest many billions of euros in bringing new technologies to the market to improve every aspect of their vehicles, But as well as the work they fund themselves, OEMs are also reliant on the research and tests carried out by scientists and engineers within educational institutions. The innovative work done by researchers at universities is invaluable for OEMs in their efforts to push the boundaries of what is possible. While there are occasions when educational institutes and OEMs do work together on specific projects, the relationship between university researchers and the automotive industry can at times seem remote. Much of the research carried out by universities is not financially backed by an OEM and it is only later on, when the work has reached a specific point, that development streams meet.
