In the development of electric vehicles, one target is of paramount importance: increasing the range on a single charge of the battery pack. Although the arguments for maximising EV range might not be as clear as many think, the fact that consumers judge the vehicles on how far they can travel on one charge means that, unless performance improves, it will become harder to sell them. And as EVs will play a bigger part in OEMs' plans to meet emissions targets in the future it's important that they gain a larger share of the market. Which is why General Motors set its engineers the target of achieving a range of 500km on the NEDC test cycle for its latest battery-electric vehicle, the Opel Ampera-e. The vehicle was developed in conjunction with the Chevrolet Bolt, which will be sold in the North American market.
