The development of available thermal energy storage (TES) technologies and their individual pros and cons are discussed. The history and development of chilled water TES are briefly reviewed, demonstrating the success and continuing refinement of the technique for thermal stratification through research and development. The components of a typical chilled water TES system are described identifying the scope of work and performance guarantee offered. An update on thermal energy storage technology in North America and around the world since the 1980s is also provided.
