ASSAULTS ON POLICE OFFICERS RESEARCH

Assaults on police officers and police staff are on the rise. This appears to be not only related to the issue of policing during the COVID restrictions, but also generally. As part of the #NotPartOfTheJob campaign, Police Scotland identified that over the past five years reported assaults on police officers and staff had increased by over 22%. Last year between April and June 2020 there were 20 reported assaults on police officers per day in Scotland. In comparison, assaults against New South Wales Police officers have been static for a number of years at approximately six or seven assaults per day and in Victoria, almost half of the front-line police officers sustained an injury from being assaulted. Overall, approximately 10% of police officers in Australia are assaulted every year and at least one officer is killed every year. Similarly, an average of one police officer a day is assaulted in New Zealand.
