Screw caps, like it or not, are increasingly becoming the closure of choice for certain wine varieties and offshore distributors throughout Australia. Recent moves by the larger wineries to convert commercial-style, domestic, ready-to-drink brands into screw cap has had a major impact on the closure split of the Australian market. Accountants, winemakers and marketers are analysing the profit margin, wine style, retail market, brand and consumer target market and then making a decision on closure type. Many in the trade are quick to blame the humble cork (which still suffers from what are now past "sins") for most of their problems, but there can be even greater challenges with screw caps and the majority of these occur at the time of application.
