It has been a tough start to a new millennium. Over the last decade, the world has wrestled with economic and political instability, unprecedented since the end of World War II. What we once took for granted is no more. By the end of last year, world output had shrunk by more than 1% - the first time since 1945 that the global economy actually got smaller. The near-death collapse of American and European economies, now burdened by bloated budget deficits and unemployment, flattened the main wine export markets globally. There are signs of green shoots but these shoots will not, necessarily, grow into immediate V-shaped recovery for the world's wealthier nations; rather, it is going to be a long, hard slog. However, there is potential for growth in emerging export markets for wine. For some countries, transformation and seismic shifts in the world's economy have brought prosperity; China, India and Brazil are counting their dollars as well as new opportunities. Australia has weathered the storm and the Australian wine sector stayed true to its course of collaboration, scientific excellence and relentless innovation across the entire value chain. In this respect, we are still in a leadership position as we start a new decade in 2010.
