This book is the updated and revised second edition of a work originally published in 2007. It is both a comprehensive and detailed guide to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system up to the latest version (DDC23), which was published in 2011. It consists of 14 chapters, appendices, bibliography, index and glossary. The first half of the book covers the premise and history of the creation and development of DDC, from the first manual edition to the latest electronic version. It clarifies the complex governance of the revisions, explaining the modus operandi, the administrative support and the extensive consultation involved. It introduces the four volumes that make up DDC, explains the basic structure of the classification scheme and the process of number building. The procedure in analysing the subject of a work is particularly well delineated. The author also explains the order of precedence when building numbers.
