Indexing: From thesauri to the semantic web (Chandos Information Professional Series)

This book is an overview of indexing within the context of libraries and the web. The author is head librarian at Leuven University College (Belgium) and teaches courses on indexing, classification, cataloguing and library automation. 'Indexing' encompasses subject cataloguing, classification, metadata, social tagging, and 'automatic' indexing. This is not a practical manual for indexers, and it does not deal with book or e-pub indexes. The introductory chapter discusses traditional library-controlled vocabularies (subject headings and thesauri) with some observations about indexing principles. Chapters 2 to 6 are devoted to 'automatic indexing' - that is, 'machine indexing' systems (databases) in which computer systems store text and provide search functions.
