It has taken many decades, for both western journalists and journalists from the Global South, to acknowledge that journalism is not universal and nor should it be. Reporters from the Global South have always looked up to the 'western' way of doing journalism and relied heavily on coaches and trainers from the Global North who were seen as key to 'fixing' their journalism. Yet, when these reporters return to their local newsrooms, the cultural, political, economic and ideological realities prevent them from applying what they learnt on how to do journalism the western way. What works in one part of the world does not always work in another.
