The Carbon Farming Initiative and Indigenous peoples' participation in carbon market opportunities

Indigenous peoples' involvement in the management and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity is well established in Australia.1 These activities draw on the specialised ecological knowledge and experience of local Indigenous communities which, for thousands of years, have used and harvested the country in a sustainable manner. The implementation of key projects and modelling over the past five to 10 years demonstrates the economic viability of carbon offsetting projects involving Indigenous peoples. These projects also provide social, environmental and cultural benefits to local and broader communities.2
