The new Chief of Army LTGEN Ken Gillespie has followed his predecessor's example of pursuing renewal and improvement in the Army's ability to survive, fight and win on the complex, often dirty battlefields of tomorrow. On 1 July next year Army Headquarters will be re-structured into two Divisions, one focused on Army's current activities and the second responsible for force development and strategic planning. Simultaneously, HQ 1st Division in Brisbane will be re-roled to focus on force preparation of Army units for current operations and contingencies. It will retain its ability to deploy as a Two-Star Joint HQ and will retain command of 1st, 3rd and 7th Brigades; importantly it will also command a new Land Combat Readiness Centre, whose main responsibility will be the preparation and certification of Army units and force elements for current operations.
