There are numerous events in the life of Air Marshal Sir George Jones that should have inspired historians long ago. Dr Peter Helson has filled the gap with this anticipated and extensive biography running to nearly 400 pages of text. Born into a working-class family in rural Victoria, Jones enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at the start of World War I and served at Gallipoli. He transferred to the Australian Flying Corps and later flew on the Western Front where he destroyed seven German aircraft to become a decorated 'ace'. Jones joined the newly created RAAF in 1921 and served for over 30 years - the last 10 (1942-1952) as Chief of the Air Staff, the post now known as Chief of Air Force.
