Monju Starts Generating Electricity, Opening New Chapter in Japan's History of FBR Development

At 9 :00 a.m. on August 29, Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation's (PNC) prototype fast breeder reactor (FBR) Monju (280 MWe) started generating electricity for the first time. After further tests, power operation tests at 100 percent of nominal output are scheduled for June 1996. Currently being considered are plans for tests and the timing for the start of actual operation (equivalent to commercial operation of commercial reactors) starting next June.
