GE, Hitachi and Toshiba to Set Up Joint Fuel Venture

On April 12, Hitachi, Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and General Electric (GE) of the U.S. announced that they would establish an international joint venture to design, develop, manufacture and sell nuclear fuel. With bases both in Japan and the U.S., the new company will be formed by transferring to it the sales, de- sign and development functions of Japan Nuclear Fuel (JNF), owned by the three companies, along with GE's fuel fabrication plant in Wilmington, Delaware. The purpose is to improve efficiency and provide comprehensive management, so as to meet the needs of customers at lower cost, with reliable fuel and services com- petitive in the global market. The three companies plan to create the joint venture by the end of this year. Its name, organization and other details are currently being discussed.
