50 YEARS OF VVR-M

Physical startup of the BBR-M reactor occurred on December 29, 1959 in Gatchina.rnResearch reactors were intensively built in the world in the 1950s. In the Soviet Union a decision was made to build almost 20 research reactors in the country and abroad. Each reactor had to become a center for the development of nuclear science. Serially built VVR-S reactors were developed for construction; these reactors were based on the VVR-2 and IRT-M swimming pool type reactors built in 1954 at the Russian Science Center Kurchatov Institute. EK-10 fuel elements with ~(235)U enrichment to 10% were used in the core.
