A method of determining the characteristics of photon radiation from an instantaneous release of gas-aerosol radioactive impurity on the basis of the indications of ARMS sensors recording the dose rate of external irradiation was examined. The dose rate distribution was modeled by the Monte Carlo method by prescribing different energy spectra of the photon radiation for point and linear sources. The average energy of the photon radiation was determined from histograms of the reconstructed spectra; this made it possible to find all necessary parameters for making predictive estimates of the dose loads on workers and the general public during radiation accidents. The average energies computed for the a priori and reconstructed photon spectra showed satisfactory agreement. The relative computational error was no greater than 2% for ascending and hump-shaped spectra and the optimal number of iterations did not exceed 2500. For a descending spectrum, the estimation error for the average photon energy was 5~6c/r but the number of iterations exceeded 12000.
