Volatile organic compounds (VOC) play an outstanding role in atmospheric chemistry as they are interacting with other atmospheric trace compounds impacting distributions of air pollutants such as ozone, NO_x, PANs, and particles (see e.g. Brasseur et al., 2003). Exchange of VOC between the earth surface and the atmosphere is mediated via multiple biological, physical, and chemical processes from both natural and human-induced sources. About 80% of global VOC emission is released by the biosphere, strongly controlled by temperature, light intensity, and the physiological activity of plants (Fall, 1999). The emitted biogenic compounds are mostly unsatu-rated and partly oxygenated hydrocarbons which are highly reactive and have a higher ozone formation potential compared to most of the anthropogenic VOC (Atkinson and Arey, 2003). Considering these facts, the contribution of biogenic VOC to ozone formation is much more important as estimated from the relation of the single processes expressed in carbon per time step. Recently, it has been demonstrated that biogenic VOC may produce 30-270 Tg particles on annual and global scales (Brasseur et al., 2003).
