摘要

Reduced visibility can easily be observed with the unaided eye and is a simple indication of the presence of suspended particles in the atmosphere. In the early 20th century two pioneering papers set the stage for Research in visibility: (1) Harald Koschmieder (1924/25) gave a full explanation of the mechanisms leading to reduced visibility, and presented methods to calculate visibility, sky radiation and multiple scattering. (2) Gustav Mie's (1908) publication on the scattter-ing of light by spherical particles permitted the calculation of the optical properties of the atmosphere (extinction coefficient, phase function, single scattering albedo), which are needed for visibility investigations.
