Raising Taxes to Balance the Budget in Eight Western Countries

Many Western countries currently have large budget deficits and significant national debt and are seeking to restore fiscal discipline. To analyze how tax increases would affect output and labor supply in the United States and seven European countries (France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, Spain, and Sweden) if each attempted to balance its budget without cutting government spending, I developed a dynamic general equilibrium model.
