Temporal Changes of Bivalves and Gastropods in Isahaya Bay Shut Off from Ariake Sea, Western Kyushu, Japan

On April 14, 1997, the inner part of Isahaya Bay in western Kyushu was shut off from the Ariake Sea by a dike for reclamation. In the shallow water of this day, aspects of water quality such as salinity suddenly changed after the shut-off, and the populations of bivalves and gastropods were affected drastically. In March 1997, before the shut-off, 15 species Of gastropods and bivalves such as Iravadia (Fluviocingula) elegantula, Modiolus (Modiolus) metcalfei, Musculista senhousia, Scapharca sativa, and Theora fragilis were collected in large numbers.
