Accounting standards across Asia are set to improve, a trend that should cheer investors, but it is already making some companies nervous. While a number of countries are considering minor changes as a direct result of accounting vulnerabilities exposed by the failure of Enron Corp., most already had been tightening standards anyway. Their efforts accelerated after the 1997-98 financial crisis, when authorities and companies across the region saw the high price of giving investors reason to worry about their financial viability. Now, with investors more likely to question corporate reporting because of Enron's failure, the implementation of better standards has become even more urgent.
