Naval air defence missile systems protect ships from aerial threats such as attacking hostile aircraft and missiles fired by enemy airborne assets and surface craft. The systems combine latest sensor technologies with weaponry and also the ship sensors to detect and destroy such threats. The latest generation of naval air defence missiles, big and small, are fully integrated within a ship's combat management system, but some can also be autonomous. Naval surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) comprises short-range self-defence systems which will be the last line of defence against incoming threats; medium-range SAMs which are part of the main armaments for most warships of frigate-sized and above and, long-range SAMs which are in the service of bigger navies.
