Several navies believe that the shipborne gun is the last ditch defence against anti-ship cruise missiles which have not been fooled by the warship's "soft kill" electronic warfare (EW) suite and chaff countermeasures, or downed by its air defence missiles, but do not agree on which gun type is best. Some navies prefer small-calibre weapons with the accuracy needed to score a direct hit on a small missile target. Others think that it is better to get close once than miss twice and opt for a medium-calibre weapon firing proximity-fused ammunition.
