Integrated Propulsion Systems for Modern Naval Ships

The design and build of today's advanced warships is the domain of the integrated industry team and the importance of partnerships and joint ventures is self-evident. Of the principal ship subsystems, (with the exception of weapons) the propulsion system is one of the most important as it impacts on vessel performance and availability- without it the ship is not a fighting force. But what are the technologies and equipment that influence the optimum propulsion system configuration, and is the growing trend towards the sourcing of a propul-sion system from one supplier a good one?
