In the Asia-Pacific region, most of the countries are surrounded by the sea requiring capable navy to keep vital sea lanes open with modern naval systems and in these modern era, this inevitably includes the deployment of submarines. Submarines play a vital role in defence strategies as they are difficult to locate and difficult to destroy when deep below the surface. These comparatively low-tech diesel-electric boats could give a small navy an asymmetric advantage against a bigger naval force.
